Many of us are familiar with the concept of tags as it pertains to Web2.0 and the ability it provides to mark information with an ad hoc series of values. I have been starting to work on a little sample app using the new Facebook toolkit and wanted to use the new tagging feature within Salesforce.com.

By default tagging is not enabled so you may want to click on Setup–>Customize–>Tags–>Tag Settings and make sure you select Enable Public Tags. Once enabled you can choose between two types of tags; personal or public tags. For my app I am going to want use public tags which mean all users will be able to see what is tagged.

Now the only thing left to do is make sure you select Show Custom Sidebar Components on All Pages under the Customize–>User Interface menu and save your changes.

That’s it – start tagging!
