After completing this unit, you’ll be able to:
Earlier, we mentioned that you’ll spend a lot of time in Setup during your time as a Salesforce administrator. And we weren’t kidding. Setup is your one-stop-shop for customizing, configuring, and supporting your org.
Since there’s so much you can do in the Setup area, it’s important to get comfortable with navigating it. There are a few ways to approach it. As you learn what’s available to you, you’ll get more comfortable finding the things you need.
You can get to Setup from any page in your Salesforce org. Activate the Setup button menu near the top of the page
( )
and select Setup from the menu. Let’s get familiar with the Setup area.
The standard view of Setups homepage features two skip navigation links at the top followed by a Search Setup edit field. This is one of two ways you can search for settings within the Setup workspace. Enter your search term in this box and press down arrow to review the list of results. You can press ENTER on one of these results to navigate to the feature you're searching for.
A list of several items follows the search field. These items take you to useful features like favorites, global actions, and Salesforce Help.
The button for the App Launcher follows.
Next is a grouping of two tabs, one for Home, which is where we are now, and another for Object Manager. Object Manager is where you can view and customize standard and custom objects in your org.
Below the Object Manager tab is an expandable menu which gives quick access to creating a new object or viewing the most recently accessed objects.
A Quick Find search field follows the Home and Object Manager tabs. You can also search here for settings within the Setup workspace. If you use the Quick Find box, type in your search term, then press TAB to move to the Setup tree view to locate the list of results.
The final element that remains constant for each Setup page is the Setup tree. The menu gives you quick links to a collection of pages that let you do everything from managing your users to modifying security settings. From this list, you can navigate to the various components of Setup, activate them by pressing enter, and tab out of the tree view to access the new page for that item.
The remainder of the page is the main window. This is where you can see whatever it is you’re trying to work on. This is the main region of your Setup page.
The Setup tree view menu is the trickiest piece to navigate because there are so many different pages you can access. There are two ways to get where you want to go. If you already have an idea where to look, expand the appropriate menu and select the page you want. If you aren’t sure where to look, use the Quick Find box or the global Setup search field at the top of the page to search. Lets say you wanted to manage your user permission sets. If you happen to know that permission sets are in the Users menu under Administration, just open that menu from the Setup tree and press ENTER on Permission Sets. Otherwise enter Permission Sets in the Quick Find box or the Setup search field near the top of the page.
There are three main categories in the Setup menu: Administration, Platform Tools, and Settings. Let’s take a look at what’s available.
Of course, these are only some of the pages you can access in the Setup menu. To get you started on the right foot, here’s a list of our top five Setup pages to know about.
