Here are a few more more tidbits about how compact layouts work.
Compact layouts support all field types except:
- text area
- long text area
- rich text area
- multi-select picklist
Users who don’t have access to certain fields in Salesforce won’t see them on the compact layout.
Removing a field from a page layout doesn’t remove it from the object’s compact layout. The two layout types are independent.
Compact Layouts and Record Types
If you have record types associated with an object, you can override the primary compact layout assignment and assign specific compact layouts to different record types. If you don’t set any record type overrides, all record types use the object’s primary compact layout by default.
