URL
Acronym for Uniform Resource Locator (previously Universal Resource Locator). The global address of a website, document, or other resource on the Internet. For example, http://www.salesforce.com.
Acceptable as an acronym by itself. Use a URL, not an URL.
Referring to External Websites
- For links to external websites, use the website name as the link text, such as You can download the latest Acrobat Reader from Adobe whenever possible. Otherwise, use the full URL for the link text excluding the http:// prefix. For example, You can download the latest Acrobat Reader from www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. For URLs that begin with https:// or ftp://, include the prefix.
- Link to only reputable, static sites. Do not link to Wikipedia.
- If you must refer to a possibly unstable site, provide context for your readers so they can perform their own internet searches to find more information.
- Don’t use external links to the unauthenticated Help, because that URL is subject to change.
