File Names and Extensions
Use the following style guidelines for file names and file extensions.
- For file, directory, and drive names, use the exact spelling and capitalization used in the program or file itself.
- Use all lowercase for file extensions. For example, Word adds .docx to a file name if you neglect to specify the file format when saving. Refer to the Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications.
- If you can't avoid using the file extension to describe the file, precede the
extension with a period; for example, “a .zip file.”
- If the extension displays within a sentence, use lowercase; for example, “A .txt file that is renamed to .rtf is not searched.”
- If the extension displays within a heading, use title case; for example, “Renaming .Txt Files.”
- File name is always two words.
