Trial types differ by where they can be started, at your listing or website, and what the customer gets, their own trial org or a read-only shared org. Here are the three trial methods:

Trialforce—starts from your listing and ideal for prospects who want a hands-on trial they can keep and customize. Prospects get their own login credentials for the trial org.
Test Drive—also starts from your listing. There’s no setup or login; prospects get instant access to a read-only shared org.
SignupRequest API—starts from your website and provides the same full experience as Trialforce.
